CASE FACTS: Kathleen States underwent surgery for the removal of an ovarian cyst. The operation was uneventful except for a complaint of pain when an I.V. tube was inserted in the back of the patient's right hand prior to surgery. The patient awoke after surgery complaining of extreme pain in her right hand, arm, shoulder, and side.
