CHASKA, Minn. _ Either the wind abated every time Justin Leonard hit a shot Saturday, or he played one of the best rounds of golf in PGA Championship history.
Leonard, splitting fairways and knocking down flagsticks in stiff winds that buffeted the Hazeltine National Golf Club, shot a brilliant 3-under-par 69 and takes a three-shot lead into the final round for Sunday.
How good was Leonard's round?
Only three others in the field of 71 broke par, and no one else broke 70. The average score of 75.87 was the highest for the third round in PGA history, breaking the record of 75.1 set in 1958.
