We little rascals, both boys and girls, gave little thought to the melody of the music blaring at us as we sat stuffed into those old motion-picture shows.

The musical score reached out from the silver screen, lassoed us, and swept us along on the frenzied chase over the hills and through the valleys of the untamed West.

Traditionally that's the way the matinee feature or serial opened, somebody forever chasing somebody, usually on ponies.

The music was loud, louder than thundering hoofbeats. Moviemakers knew the volume had to be turned up to be heard over a standing-room-only audience of howling juveniles.

So what's their excuse ...
