WASHINGTON _ Saturday marks the 28th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. In a post-Sept. 11 world and just months before Cyprus' anticipated accession to the European Union, this is a landmark anniversary.
Today 40 percent of Cyprus remains occupied by Turkish troops, making it one of the few divided capital cities in the world. Greek and Turkish Cypriots live on opposite sides of 113 miles of barbed wire that runs across the island, separating the two communities. In the north, 40,000 Turkish troops make it one of the most heavily militarized areas in the world.
