Tool Length Measuring For Machining Centers
All current CNC machining center controls have some form of "tool length compensation." This feature allows the programmer to ignore the tool's length while the program is being written. The machine operator (or setup man) will measure the length of each tool and input the length value into the control separate from the program. This keeps the programmer from having to know the exact length of each tool as the program is being prepared.
There is quite a controversy throughout the industry related to just how the measurement of each tool's length should be made. Some people contend that the operator (or setup ...
