To paraphrase a famous Connecticut author, reports of the hotel industry's demise in Fairfield County have been greatly exaggerated. In fact, it seems to be picking up quite a bit, thank you.

According to Smith Travel Research, hotels in the towns included in the Coastal Fairfield County Convention & Visitor Bureau area report occupancy rates are down 5.1 percent from January through May of 2002. However, the rate improved significantly from a 15 percent deficit in January.

The towns covered are Greenwich, Stamford, Darien, New Canaan, Norwalk, Westport, Wilton, Weston, Fairfield, Bridgeport, Easton, Monroe and Stratford.
