"An American in Paris" helps the Academy sing
Musicals simply get no respect when it comes to the Academy Awards, and Gene Kelly lamented as much when he coaxed MGM to let him make "An American in Paris." Don't do it for the awards, do it for the love of making a good movie, he told them, because the Academy won't go for it. They like serious dramas, and "it's a form of snobbishness on their part," Kelly said.
