After consulting with major league scouts, Rocky Mountain News baseball reporter Jack Etkin has compiled this scouting report on the American League wild-card Anaheim Angels:
Starting pitching
Kevin Appier is a veteran stabilizer with a maximum-effort, herky-jerky motion that makes him deceptive. He's nearly 35 years old, and his velocity, once a plus, is now an average 88-91 mph, but his fastball has good sinking action when he keeps it down. Appier pitches to both sides of the plate, and his slider and split-fingered pitches are effective.
