SANTA BARBARA, Calif.-In fearful times, the world can turn to Julia Child. Even as she turned 90 last month, she says, "I'm not afraid of anything," and she means it.

"No fear," agreed chef Jacques Pepin, describing his friend of 40 years. "When she was 85, I asked what she wanted to do next, and she said, `Learn to ride a motorcycle.' "

In "Appetite for Life: The Biography of Julia Child," author Noel Riley Fitch describes a scene in which Child, aboard a rickety C-54, calmly reads a book "as the plane began to plummet, the lights went out, pieces of ice ticked against the window and one of the men got quietly sick into his handkerchief."
