IN winter, celebritysaturated Barbados is a 21-mile-long island of palm trees and sandy beaches, perma-tans and cellulitereduction regimes. On the millionaire-friendly west coast, the water is as smooth as Dale Winton, while in the south, both the sea and atmosphere can become as raucous as the Big Brother household. Sandy Lane soaks up the gossip-column inches and the cream of the celebrity guests, but there are a sheaf of hotels that don't charge quite as much for a quintessentially Caribbean experience.
Which brochures? Caribtours, Kuoni, Elegant Resorts, Virgin Holidays, Tropical Places, Hayes & Jarvis, Cresta Holidays.
