Oct. 11--Instead of a monopoly, satellite TV viewers may get bare-knuckled competition.
Charlie Ergen's plan to purchase DirecTV and combine it with his EchoStar Communications is on the ropes. Rupert Murdoch of News Corp. and John Malone of Liberty Media Corp. appear ready to step in and claim the prize.
That would pit Ergen against two old foes who know how to hit him where it hurts. Industry watchers say that may be good for consumers, if only because DirecTV desperately needs an infusion of energy after a year under Littleton-based EchoStar's influence.
