In almost every science fiction movie and novel, the machines all talk. The most famous example is probably HAL, the paranoid computer who sabotages the mission to Jupiter in 2001: A Space Odyssey. It may be ironic that the year 2001 has now come and gone, space probes have indeed traveled to Jupiter and beyond, and we still don't have ATMs that can talk.
For the blind, that's enormously frustrating. We already have personal computers that talk. With today's screen reading programs, the blind can surf the Internet, trade online, perform online banking transactions, and do just about anything else that sighted people can do.
