AI has played a crucial role in the history of computer music almost since its beginning in the fifties. However, until recently, most efforts had been on compositional and improvisational systems, and little efforts had been devoted to performance systems. Furthermore, AI approaches to performance tried to capture the performer's touch, that is, the knowledge applied when performing a score by means of rules. This performance knowledge concerns not only technical features but also the affective aspects implicit in music.
