Sep. 13--To restore the confidence of investors shaken by corporate accounting abuses, Richard Syron, chief executive of Thermo Electron Corp., suggests managers heed a tip from the film "The Godfather," when a gangster mentions that his boss "likes to hear bad news fast."

The principle applies to publicly traded companies as well, said Syron, in a colorful speech at Boston's Park Plaza hotel yesterday morning: Companies must build cultures in which subordinates don't hide setbacks.
