The European Commission gave feta cheese a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) in a Regulation it adopted on October 14 meaning it can only be made in certain parts of Greece. This follows an eight-year battle in which the Council refused to endorse the Commission proposal and neither registered a qualified majority in favour or against. The United Kingdom, Denmark and France were among the countries that wanted to continue their production of feta cheese because under the Commission Regulation, they now have to stop their production in five years or change the name of the cheese.
