MITCH SNYDER, who died by suicide on July 5, was the master of accusation. He was described as an "advocate" for the homeless, but it would be more true to say that he used this ill-assorted collection of the abnormal and the irresponsible to dramatize his disgust with society. In this he was in "uneasy alliance with the media," as the Washington Post put it in a headline. He had a way of making you feel ashamed of yourself," Chuck Conconi wrote in the Post-this meant as a compliment. Others, including Mitch himself, saw his position more clearly. In 1985, standing outside a homeless shelter in Washington, Snyader told me: "What we're doing here is very dangerous."
