It's amazing how comforting a colorful, handmade blanket can be to a seriously ill or traumatized child who's spending time in a hospital bed.

This is what social work intern Renee Meyer is explaining to students at Tarkington Elementary School in Wheeling Township Elementary District 21 this month as kids there are coloring patches of fabric that will eventually be made into blankets for less fortunate children.

Meyer is working with Project Linus to get the swatches sewn together and delivered to various hospitals. Since 1995, this nationwide organization has given out more than 400,000 security blankets to kids around ...
