Brain researchers said Tuesday they have discovered the first effective treatment for a rare neurological disorder that causes progressive strokes in teens and young children.

Dr. Yasutoshi Koga of Kurume University, Fukuoka, Japan said he and his colleagues discovered that giving the amino acid L-arginine to patients with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy lactic acidosis or MELAS, slowed the progression of the disease.

The research was presented at the 127th Annual Meeting of the American Neurological Association.
