I VERY MUCH APPRECIATED YOUR "Better Angels" [September 30] cover story. Despite being the descendant of both Union and Confederate soldiers, I always believed that the soldiers often saw with a great moral clarity. In fact, my great-great-grandfather in the Texas Hill Country fought in the Union Army, saying that he couldn't fight for slavery. What I had forgotten about before reading your article was that three other Union Army ancestors were transplanted southerners. They certainly had to understand what cause they were fighting for.
