US Ally Saudi Arabia Lobbies Against Military Strike on Iraq
While the US administration continues to mull over options for its policy of regime change in Iraq, the Mideast Gulf's dominant oil power and US ally Saudi Arabia is actively lobbying against military action and stating openly that its territory is off-limits for US forces.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said last month that the kingdom would abide by any UN resolution defining future action against Iraq -- a comment that was widely as interpreted as meaning Saudi Arabia had shifted in favor of participating in any offensive.
