Oct. 18--The tectonic plates of Kansas City philanthropy are shifting again, sending a tremor through the community of service organizations that tries to do good with other people's money.
The new chief executive of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the city's largest, said Thursday that the foundation planned to phase out most of its small grants because they were inefficient to manage and not effective uses of the foundation's money.
Instead, the $1.7 billion foundation intends to make fewer but bigger grants, hoping for bigger rewards.
