Nearly 50 years after her death at age 47 (or 44, if you take her word for it), her flamboyant self-expression raises few eyebrows. Intimate revelations have replaced Yankee reserve. Memoirs are tell-all, and talk shows shrink at nothing.

While she's not the only reason we've become so brazen, she blazed the trail. She didn't believe skeletons belonged in closets. Hers danced center stage to a prime-time beat.
