THE person responsible for recruiting British spy Sidney Reilly, the inspiration for James Bond, was from Birmingham, it was revealed today. Major Norman Thwaites, born in the city in 1872 and raised at the family home in Summerhill Road, Ladywood, is thought to have introduced Reilly to MI6 during 1917.
