Look up and look down, and the Grand Lux Cafe in Chicago appears as if it has been plunked down in the middle of a historic hotel, and an ornate one at that. The floor is covered with richly patterned marble, and gilded, carved woodwork covers the ceiling. Yet there's an air of modernity too, in the brushed-steel arms of low-slung chairs and the multipatterned velvet covering booths and banquettes.
