Cosmologist Robert Kirshner, a Harvard professor, has found evidence that the universe might be expanding at an accelerating rate.
If that's so, the time will come -- not in your lifetime and not likely in the lifetime of the human race, or, even, the solar system we inhabit -- when stars will be so far apart that the sky will always appear to be dark.
Kirshner traces that evidence in "Extravagant Universe: Exploding Stars, Dark Energy and the Accelerating Cosmos" (Princeton University Press: $29.95).
