Oct. 22--Financially troubled United Airlines announced a new round of layoffs Monday as it continued putting the final touches on a business plan it hopes will lead to a $1.8 billion federal loan guarantee.

The world's second largest airline is laying off 1,250 workers by closing three reservation offices, shuttering a maintenance line and changing service to five cities.
