OCTOBER is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The aim of this observance is to increase public awareness, especially by women, of the importance of early breast cancer detection in order to prevent the disease.

There are many forms of cancer. Breast cancer is one of them and it is the most common among women. Various studies support this finding. In the United States, in year 2001, some 192,000 new cases were diagnosed. For the year 2002, some 203,000 cases are expected to be diagnosed. Forty thousand of these new cases are expected to die from breast cancer. There are 2 million breast cancer survivors in the US alone.
