Amid all the uncertainties stemming from the awful sniper case that has gripped the nation this month, one thing is certain. These won't be the last murders committed with firearms.

That's why it is so important to work toward a national ballistic database. The reason law-enforcement officers were able to link all of the sniper shootings was the unique "fingerprint" on each of the bullets fired from the sniper's gun. That same technology could be used to trace a gun used in a crime back to its owner - but only if the president and Congress develop the will and create the database that would make that possible.
