NORFOLK -- As several schooners rode at anchor and roared their approval with ceremonial cannons, the first step in the birth of a new tall ship was celebrated Monday on the city's waterfront.
Several dozen supporters, investors and stalwarts of the local waterfront applauded at the official start of construction of the Schooner Virginia, a sleek tall ship that will represent the state in ports of call around the world.
The keel-laying celebration, on a cloudy, blustery day, was a long time coming: six years for members of the schooner board; eight for the original dreamers of the dream.
