Made in 1951, on a small budget, High Noon would win four Academy Awards (Best Actor for Gary Cooper, Best Editing for Harry Gerstad and Elmo Williams, and Best Music and Best Song by Dimitri Tiomkin), and be acclaimed as one of the greatest Westerns ever made. Now available in DVD format, the classic film is accompanied by Leonard Maltin's 1992 documentary, The Making of High Noon. Although only ten years older than Darkness at High Noon, Maltin's film seems to have come from a different world. Commissioned by Republic Pictures, the twenty-two-minute featurette is necessarily celebratory of the entire enterprise, and avoids all controversies.
