PURCHASING'S Leadtime Index (1992=100), which tracks national average delivery speeds for a market basket of more than 150 industrial commodities, gained nearly seven and a half points in September bringing its annual rate of change to just shy of zero. Translation: As slow as it may be, the manufacturing recovery continues at a pace that will soon force producers and distributors to crank up their volumes in terms of output, staffing and inventory replenishment.
