An 1992 Michael Ondaatje won the Booker Prize for his novel, The English Patient. Subsequently, the book was adapted into an Oscar winning film starring Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas and Colin Firth. It told the story, in a series of flashbacks, of a tragic love affair between the dying Hungarian Count, Ladislaus de Almasy, played by Fiennes and an Englishwoman, Katherine Clifton, played by Scott Thomas. Taking place on the eve of the Second World War, its location was the deserts of North Africa.
