Cell phone and portable PC users are about to get a jolt of new energy. Aluminum-air fuel cells poised to hit the market next year will enable them to walk around unplugged for up to a dozen times longer than they can with devices using conventional lithium batteries.
Although they can't be recharged, the fuel cells, housed in disposable cartridges, won't cost an arm and a leg either. The price tag will be under $10, compared with $99 for the rechargeable lithium batteries widely used today.
Figure that retailers will move about 50,000 fuel cells for small devices after they're rolled out late next year and 2 million in '04, ...
