Islamic art aficionados from around the world will gather in London in the third week of October for the second of the twice yearly Islamic Art weeks celebrated by the city's two best known fine arts auctioneers Christie's and Sotheby's. The sales will include Islamic manuscripts, paintings, textiles, metalwork, carpets, rugs and a spectacular selection of ceramics.
The small but perfectly cast medieval bronze fountainhead in the shape of a lion provides the centrepiece of Sotheby's Arts of the Islamic World sale, which will be held on 16 October.
