Oct. 25--Eye-care products maker Alcon Inc. said Thursday that its third-quarter profit soared 76 percent to $125.1 million as it cut expenses and saw greater demand for its pharmaceuticals, particularly the glaucoma medication Travatan.
Alcon, which went public in March, said earnings per share adjusted for IPO-related expenses were 40 cents in the quarter, exceeding analysts' consensus estimate of 34 cents. But on a day when the Dow Jones industrial average fell 2.1 percent to 8,317.34, Alcon shares fell 99 cents to $38.01.
