Pattern Determines Construction Materials
In the first segment of this series devoted to patternmaking, we covered the patternmaker's essential role in the metalcasting process. Part 2 discussed the practicality tool before committing to an expensive full-pattern design. In this installment, pattern construction methods are surveyed.
Patterns determine the ultimate shape and size of a casting. They can be small or very large, simple or highly complex, of wood, metal or plastic. Pattern construction techniques involve both labor and materials, two important cost factors that influence the casting buyer and the foundry supplier.
