Creating a user-friendly tablet computer has been a goal for software and hardware manufacturers for about a decade, but nothing has quite measured up to expectations. Apple's Newton was ahead of its time but it never really caught on. And Palm devices from Palm and Handspring, and Pocket PCs from Microsoft, aren't powerful enough to be a full-fledged desktop replacement. But Microsoft may have finally gotten it right with the Tablet PC. Models from several manufacturers will go on sale shortly.
