SAN FRANCISCO -- Remember the old days, when the best track to becoming a big league manager was to be a marginally talented player?
Earl Weaver never played in the big leagues. Neither did Jim Leyland nor John McNamara. Sparky Anderson played exactly one season in the bigs, and the likes of Tommy Lasorda and Tom Kelly only had cups of coffee.
