Oct. 26--Sen. Paul Wellstone, a passionate Minnesota liberal locked in one of the tightest re-election contests in the country, died Friday with his wife, Sheila, his daughter Marcia, three aides and two pilots in a plane crash in northern Minnesota.
His death unleashed a wave of grief throughout his state and among his Senate colleagues, and it dramatically complicated the Democratic Party's prospects for maintaining control of the narrowly divided Senate.
