In his "Foreword" to Jeanne Chenault Porter's anthology of Neapolitan sourcewritings, Baroque Naples: A Documentary History, 1600-1800, Ronald G. Musto explains the neglect Naples has suffered as a historical subject in the United States in terms of the city's connection to a particularly problematic period: "Naples, long associated with the glory of the Baroque, shared the disdain of much of the twentieth century for its style and ethic" (xvii).
