Intranet development projects put information professionals' leadership skills to the test. Too often, those leadership skills are lacking. Librarians attending a recent vendor-sponsored seminar on taxonomies shared their experiences with intranet and taxonomy development. To my mind, they demonstrated a severe lack of leadership. As they delved into their experiences, the librarians voiced problems with getting the IT staff to take their contributions seriously, to include them in the project at all, and/or to realize that the taxonomy or content was a specialty of librarianship and a necessary first step in the intranet building process.
