Oct. 27--Change, it is said, can bring opportunity. For Sandra Morris, it was wrenching.
First she lost her cotton mill job. Next she drained her small savings. Then she sold her lawn mower to buy her husband's diabetes medication.
Conventional thinking among many economists is that, after a textile mill closes, its employees often find better-paying jobs or retrain for stronger careers.
But The Observer tracked down the employees of one closed mill and found that, for most, it doesn't work that way.
