Sony Electronics introduced the Mini DV format many years ago with the venerable and now retired DCR-VX1000 camcorder. It's hard to count the generations since that first model, but it can be safely said that the Mini DV format has gone on to become the tape format of choice for videographers who want the best in image quality and digital convenience. Many camcorders using the Mini DV format have since appeared from several different companies, but there has been a shakeout as some manufacturers have decided to stop making them.
