The title of this book derives from a description of Abraham Polonsky by Congressman Harold Velde during the 1951 investigation of Hollywood by the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities (HUAC). The authors seek to turn that criticism on its head by arguing that Polonsky's literary and political work was dangerous only to those who wanted to stifle examination of the fault lines of the American social order.
