As economic uncertainty slows the pace of office and retail projects, church construction is growing at the fastest rate in 40 years.

Based on data for the first seven months of 2002, construction of church-related institutions should surpass 52 million square feet for the year, according to Robert Murray, vice president and chief economist of The McGraw-Hill Construction Information Group.

"Essentially, in terms of square footage, that growth is the highest level for any year going back to 1963," Murray said.
