The European Parliament has passed a parliamentary resolution recommending that abortion should be made legal in all 15 states in the European Union (EU). The resolution, which is not binding on member states or on states seeking to join the EU, also called for the states to lift any sanctions that might be used against women who have an abortion. The resolution called for abortion to be "legalized, safe and accessible" throughout the EU and proposed the creation of an overall EU policy on abortion to replace the current system whereby each country legislates on abortion individually.
