The most recent volume of Champion's complete works of Madame de Stael, published in 2000, is a real gift for Stael scholars. Simone Balaye has brought her vast knowledge of Stael's life and writings to bear on a novel rich in artistic, literary, and geographic references. Although it is definitely not an edition aimed at students or the pleasure reader of Corinne (that remains Balaye's affordable Folio edition published in 1985), Balaye's erudition and indisputable mastery of Stael's work make this voluminously footnoted text an invaluable one for Stael scholars.
