NEWHALL - Despite being born in the majestic setting of Vasquez Rocks, Kia - an orphaned red-tail hawk raised by humans - would have virtually no chance of surviving in the wild.
So instead of hunting prey in the canyons of the Santa Clarita Valley and along the Santa Clara River, Kia will help teach schoolchildren and other visitors at the Placerita Canyon Nature Center about hawks and other raptors.
``We have two kinds of cripples here - physical and social cripples,'' said Darrell Wanner, supervisor at Placerita Canyon State Park. ``Kia is a social cripple.''
