When Ailanthus altissima visited New York, Boston and Washington around 1751, everyone thought it suitable for a young nation. Here was the perfect tree. You didn't have to water, and it grew like crazy, making a big shady canopy in just a few years. This was important when you irrigated by bucket and ladle.

This tree was oblivious to bad soil and air pollution from coal-burning. It stood up to hurricanes and days of inundation in saltwater. Ailanthus could be mercilessly hacked to the ground and rebound bigger and more vigorous than ever. Get one started and you could grow a forest of them.
