When Johnny Dowd released his debut album five years ago, he was 50 and fresh from a job as a mover in upstate New York. His albums since have gained positive reviews plus a cult following, a cheering section seduced by the strangeness in his lo-fi country blues. "The Pawnbroker's Wife" (Catamount), his latest, continues his spooky character songs starring strippers and madmen straight from a Jim Thompson novel or a David Lynch dream sequence.
